Children's Dentistry

Your child's dental care should start in infancy, as you gently clean gums with a clean, damp cloth after feedings. By the time the first tooth appears, you should be ready with a tiny toothbrush and approved pediatric toothpaste.

The first baby teeth that appear are usually the two bottom front teeth. You will notice them erupting when your baby is about 6-8 months old. Next to follow will be the 4 upper front teeth and the remainder of your baby's teeth will appear periodically; usually in pairs along the sides of the jaw until the child is about 2 1/2 years old.

By the age of 2 1/2 years old, your child should have all 20 of their baby teeth. Between the ages of 5 and 6 the first permanent teeth will begin to erupt. Some of the permanent teeth replace baby teeth and some don't. Don't worry if some teeth are a few months early or late as all children are different!

Your child's baby teeth are not merely "placeholders" and they are not "disposable". Maintaining the health of your child's baby teeth sets the precedent for a lifetime of proper oral hygiene, and keeps the gums and the permanent teeth housed below the gum-line in good shape.

Children's Dentistry

Your child's baby teeth serve a vital role in their development, so caring for them is essential.

Your Child's First Dental Visit

Your child's first "regular" dental visit should be just after their third birthday. You can prepare your child by reading books about going to the dentist, brushing and counting your teeth together, and even bringing your child for a preview of our Hillside dental office in so they can meet Dr. Doan and Dr. Abbareddy, our team and see how welcoming our practice is.

The first dental visit is usually short and involves very little treatment. We often ask parents to simply sit in the dental chair and hold their child during the examination. You may also be asked to wait in the reception area during part of the visit so that a natural, trusting relationship can be built between your child and your dentist.

Dr. Doan or Dr. Abbareddy will gently examine your child's teeth and gums. X-rays may be taken (to look for decay and check on the progress of your child's permanent teeth under the gums). We may also clean your child's teeth if needed, and apply topical fluoride to help protect the teeth against decay.

Cavity Prevention Techniques

We offer sealants for children's teeth to lessen the risk of decay starting in the crevices of their baby teeth. These sealants take only a few moments to apply, are painless, and serve as an additional barrier against bacteria.

Our team will also review proper at home oral care with you, to ensure that proper brushing and flossing is being done daily and that the child is receiving sufficient fluoride at home to protect their teeth.

We also recommend watching your child's diet choices at home and at school. Help them:

When you set up the appointment, ask about a preview visit as well. Call our office at (316) 847-6103.
