Common Dental Emergencies
In many cases, a dental emergency involves a trauma, during which teeth or gums may be visibly injured. In such cases, the mouth should be rinsed with cold water, and a cold compress should be applied.
For bitten tongue or lips, apply direct pressure and call our office. For a chipped tooth, locate the fragment if possible and call our office to let us know you are coming in. If you cannot find the fragment, don’t worry.
Any knocked out teeth should be collected and either placed in the socket and held there with clean gauze, or placed in a small cup of cool milk, saline solution or ice water so it doesn’t dry out. Call our office to let us know you are coming.
For children with injuries to the mouth or teeth, attempt to keep them call and call our office immediately. Follow the above steps for permanent teeth, and don’t worry if a baby tooth is knocked out – the permanent one will be checked to ensure there is no damage and will come in to replace it on schedule.
